Meditation & Self Hypnosis

By Bill Hard (Dharmachari Achalavajra)

Meditation

I have been practising Buddhist meditation for thirty years. I was ordained into the Western Buddhist Order some 15 years ago. I believe that meditation is a powerful tool for self-transformation. It will allow us to discover the reality of ourselves and the world around us on deeper and deeper levels. I think that this sense of discovery, of being willing to meet our experience without expectation or aversion is a vital element to keep meditation fresh and alive.

Over the years I have come to see meditation as a journey of discovery; as a path to discovering our deeper nature by calming down the constant chorus of craving and aversions. This helps us to meet each experience without an agenda and be continually surprised, delighted and challenged by what we discover.

Meditation can help us change - what we learn about ourselves and the world can bring about profound changes over time. However I believe that hypnosis and self-hypnosis are better tools for achieving strategic change – i.e. where you want to change a habit or develop a new competence.

Many of the techniques are similar and really the only difference is the specific goal that gives direction to hypnosis or self-hypnosis. It is true that when an experienced meditator works in meditation they will have goals such as cultivating loving kindness or achieving a stable basis of concentration. The point about this kind of cultivation is that it is designed to help the mind be calm and open to new experience. If we start to have an agenda about very specific change that we want from our meditation practise this can distort our practise.
